Lore Systems Testimonial
Hosting provider Lore Systems’ independently confirms MiserWare reduces operational costs
Lore Systems is a leading IT services company providing cutting-edge managed datacenter solutions and complete IT and telecommunications infrastructure management services. Michael Velotta, founder and CTO, has watched power costs grow to the single largest line-item infrastructure expenditure as his IT hosting business has scaled. “It now costs more to power our IT equipment than the initial system acquisition costs,” says Velotta.
Lore Systems recently completed a beta test of MiserWare software including MicroMiser, the standalone single-system client, and ServerMiser ES, the network solution. Mr. Velotta provided the following summary of his experiences:

“It took less than 5 minutes to install and run MicroMiser following download from MiserWare’s secure website. MicroMiser immediately went to work saving energy on my Intel laptop running RHEL 5.3. On my laptop, which I use to conduct most of my daily operational duties, MicroMiser reported 35% CPU energy savings. This works out to about 20% longer battery life when I am using my laptop. I noticed no performance loss while the software was reducing my energy consumption.
I installed ServerMiser ES on several systems available here at Lore including a Dell PowerEdge server to evaluate both the energy savings as well as the amount of work required for installation and management. ServerMiser ES installed out of the box. During benchmarking, there was no discernible performance impact on our systems and workloads. Based on the observed energy savings in our beta test, we estimate installation of ServerMiser ES across the 100 servers within Lore Systems' datacenter operations infrastructure would lead to an annual bottom line savings of $2,200 due to the reduced power consumption and increased usable life of servers.
We also tested the user interface and console management components of ServerMiser ES. The software provides a central console for installation and management of all of the servers in a deployment across a network. ServerMiser ES collects energy savings information while the software runs and centralizes the data in a SQLite database. Though I understand we are able to create our own scripts for analyzing report data, I found the canned scripts provided with the software to be sufficient for our needs of tracking energy savings across the infrastructure. We used the existing APC PDUs in our infrastructure to further verify that the reported data matched our measurements.
In summary, in Lore environments server availability is critical. Based on our testing, MiserWare products ensure availability is maintained. The significant energy savings offered by MiserWare we believe will lead to thousands of dollars in direct savings ($2,200 annually) and additional indirect savings ($4,000, twice the direct savings in annual cooling cost reductions). The software seems to have been designed for ease of integration in our data center environs and we are currently planning a phased roll out in our production environments.”
